Shu Wang

Shu Wang was born in 1978 in Panjin, China. A gifted pianist, she began composing at the age of 12 and won a place at the renowned Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing, 4 years later.Following her graduation, she was commissioned to write the background- and signature-music for a 26-episode TV drama that was broadcast across China. That same year, she branched into commercial children’s television as music editor for Beijing-based CCTV. A spell as pianist with a chamber group, accompanying the Zhong Guo Ge Wu Tuan ensemble, kept alive her love of more traditional music.

In 2003, Shu came to the Guildhall to study with Malcolm Singer for a Masters Degree in composition. Since her arrival she has written, among other pieces, a Dorothy Adams Prize-winning string quartet and music for contemporary dance for three cellos, drum kit and DJ, which was performed at the London Contemporary Dance School. She acknowledges a stylistic shift in her composition. “Since I came to London, the more and very important things I have learned … is to understand better about the connection between classical and contemporary ‘classical’ music, shape and spacing.”

Now, Shu Wang works at the Yehudi Menuhin School as a music assistant. She wrote the accompanying music for the Chinese State Circus tour of the UK, which culminated in 14 consecutive performances at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. For 2007, Shu has been commissioned to compose works both for the Swan Orchestra, Stratford-upon-Avon and the International School, Beijing. She has also been invited to give a week of composition master classes in Beijing for both teachers and pupils
