Born in Varese in 1978, composer Lorenzo Bassignani first studied music with Marco Conti at the Civica Scuola di Jazz in Milan, before graduating to Trinity College of Music, London, where his mentors included Steve Watts, Geoff Gascoyne and Paul Bartholomew. His professional career began before he left Italy, initially as a singer/performer with The No One Else Gospel Singers and The Greensleeves Gospel Choir. Both afforded him the opportunity to perform in the spotlight at a variety of events across Italy, not least the Riva Del Garda International Gospel Competition, and with great singers such as Julia St Louis, Barbara Evans, Joyce e Yuille and Junior Robinson.
Bassignani’s interest in composing and arranging string and big band music charts started at Trinity, and before long he was performing in top venues such as the Tokyo Opera House, the Manchester Jazz Festival, the Moleto International Jazz Festival and the National Theatre. Bassignani has also created and developed The Andy Davies Quartet, an international jazz project whose style has been described as “classy, melodic music with unexpected twists”, (www.jazzeddie.com) and with whom he has recorded two albums.
Bassignani currently writes electronic music, mixing his great skills as a performer with his compositional ideas, and including everything from drum 'n' bass, through jazz, to Latin music. His recent writing and arranging collaborations have been with Junik (with Giampaolo Scatozza), American diva Lola Morales, electro-jazz band ADQ, singer/songwriter Leonardo di Lorenzo and his own electronic jazz/groove project, KI.
